Chapter C. Clusters and Cluster stars
- Partial List of cluster names
Clusters (and cluster stars) which have no NGC or IC number
are called under the generic appellation Cl or Cl*
followed by the cluster names and numbers as described below.
The table on the next page lists most of the possible names associated
to star clusters, with the exception of NGC and IC.
The following syntax is to be used:
- A cluster is named Cl followed by
the cluster name and number (e.g. Cl Blanco 1)
- The designation of a cluster star in the main member list of a cluster
is: the cluster name preceded by Cl and followed by a running number
(Example: Cl Blanco 1 8 is star #8 in the open cluster Blanco 1).
- When several lists of member stars exist, the designation is:
the cluster name preceded by Cl* followed by an abbreviation of the
list and the running number of the star in the list
(Example: Cl* Melotte 25 VA 13 is star #13 in the list by
Van Altena for Melotte 25, the Hyades cluster).
Examples of designations of stars in Clusters:
NGC 2264 | an NGC cluster |
NGC 2264 2 | a star in NGC 2264 |
Cl Melotte 25 | Melotte 25: the Hyades cluster |
Cl Melotte 25 1 | 1st star in the main list by Van Bueren |
Cl* Melotte 25 VA 13 | 13th star in a list by Van Altena |
More details about nomenclature can be obtained by the commands
info cati name or
info -l cati name
the latter being used for a long description,
including the authors and full bibliographical references.
Note: a similar system of designation is used for the planetary
nebulae (PN), using a prefix PN. For instance,
PN Hb 1 represents the 1st star in the list by
Hubble.
A complete list of all such PN lists can be found by the command
info cati PN
